The fast, skill-based arena-style competition that turned the original Quake games into multiplayer legends is making a triumphant return with Quake Champions. The official synopsis accompanying the announcement reads:

The game will release exclusively on PC, and more information about the game will be made available in the coming months (likely during QuakeCon, which runs from August 4-7). Each of the characters will have his or her own skillset, allowing players to choose characters based on their preferred playstyles or the strengths and weaknesses of others playing on their team.

The Quake Champions reveal trailer doesn't feature any gameplay, but it does give fans a look at some of the character options they'll have when the game is released. Bethesda Softworks released a cinematic first-look trailer for the game during its 2016 E3 showcase event on Sunday night. Now, that multiplayer experience is set to take center stage once again with the unveiling of Quake Champions. Subsequent entries in the series built up the game's multiplayer aspects, eventually ditching the single-player experience in favor of arena-based multiplayer combat. Originally created by Id Software, Quake built upon Doom's gameplay and crafted a unique first-person experience that sent players through maze-like stages to battle the game's monsters using various weapons. After Doom was rebooted, rumors abounded that Quake would be the next classic shooter to get a refresh.
